City of Portland – Victim Witness Advocate Intern

Police- Victim Witness Advocate Intern:

The City of Portland’s Police Department is seeking an intern to assist with providing support and guidance to victims of crime in the city of Portland. The employee will work alongside the police department’s Victim Witness Advocate to provide victims/survivors with information about crime Victim’s Rights for the State of Maine, guidance and understanding about the criminal justice systems, advocating on their behalf and referring them to services.

This role will work with a variety of individuals to include those who have been impacted by scams, identity theft, and harassment amongst various other crimes and those that need guidance and assistance navigating systems such as court, victims compensation, and assisting individuals with referrals to necessary social and community resources.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

• Applicants should be majoring in the following fields: sociology and/or social work, psychology/forensic psychology or criminology and/or criminal justice with a basic understanding of trauma-informed practice and engagement.
• Candidates must have strong interpersonal and organizational skills, empathy and compassion.
• Must have a solid understanding of the criminal justice system.
• Candidates should have the skills to connect with people from various social, economic, and educational backgrounds.
• In addition, candidates need to be trusted with confidential information and data.

Internship Details:

• Rate of Pay:$20.00 per hour
• Duration of Internship:Flexible
• Schedule:12 -18 hours per week
• Location: Portland Police Department, 109 Middle Street Portland Maine
