UNAGB Internship Summary – Education Internship

Fall 2024

If contacted to move forward in the interview process, applicants will be asked to participate in a Zoom interview, submit 1-2 writing samples, and provide contact information for 1-2 references.

Who We Are and What We Do

Our Mission: The United Nations Association of Greater Boston (UNAGB) is dedicated to building a strong multigenerational network of global citizens. We educate, inspire, and engage members of the community on critical global issues central to the work and mission of the United Nations.

Our Education Team furthers this mission by creating opportunities for young people to develop as productive global citizens through the experience of Model UN as a learning platform. Through our educational program, we equip the next generation of globally-minded civic leaders with key 21st century skills of communication, collaboration, creative problem solving, and critical thinking.

Our Impact: We reach nearly 100 schools and over 5,000 students each year and plan to expand our reach and impact over the next few years.

Responsibilities

  • Primary: Research and write topic guides focusing on a wide variety of global issues (human rights, international security, environment, etc.)
  • Represent UNAGB to the broader community, being an ambassador for its mission and work
  • Perform various operations and materials creation tasks related to Model UN programs/event planning
  • Attend and help run Model UN Conferences and other youth programming (attendance on these dates required, unless otherwise discussed in the interview process)
    • September 2024 (Date TBD): Greater Boston Model UN (GBMUN)
    • November 2024 (Date TBD): Middle School Model UN (MSMUN)
    • December 2024 (Date TBD): December Invitational Model UN (DIMUN)

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Passionate about global issues and community development
  • Exceptionally strong communication, research, and writing skills required
  • Self-motivated and self-directed, organized, and punctual
  • Collaborative and experienced in working with teams in both in personal and remote settings
  • Has completed relevant coursework and/or has significant life experience in; in international relations, economics, history, political science, journalism, education, or a related field
  • Model UN, Model Congress, or Speech & Debate experience is a plus

Details

  • Start date: ~ September 9; End date: ~ December 14
  • Time commitment: 12-20 hours a week, primarily Monday-Friday, as well as a few Saturday and evening programs. This internship is primarily remote with some in person meetings/events.
  • This is an unpaid internship. It can be used to fulfill school-specific requirements related to volunteer hours, our course committments.
  • Internship dependent on the successful completion of a CORI background check.
  • This role is managed by the Senior Manager of Youth Education Programs

Additional Opportunities

  • All interns are encouraged, but not required, to become UNA-USA members – free for young professionals, between 18-26 (https://unausa.org/join/membership/); UNAGB staff will recommend/serve as a reference for future leadership positions (volunteer/staff) with UNA-USA opportunities
  • All interns are invited to join the UNAGB network of interns and staff alumni via a private LinkedIn community of other professionals who have also volunteered and worked for UNAGB. UNABG staff actively curate this community and share/encourage the sharing of job opportunities related to international relations and the local diplomatic community.
  • All interns are invited to visit the UNAGB office to see the inside of a small-but-mighty non-profit in action and gain exposure to learn more about possible careers in the nonprofit sector
  • All interns are encouraged (but not required) to attend UNAGB’s SDG Perspective Series events.
